This course gives candidates with no previous electrical experience the competence required to become an electrician’s mate and is the first step to becoming gold card qualified.

The course is made up of five units consisting of four theory units and one practical unit. Information for online end of unit tests below:
Unit 201: Health and Safety: Duration is 40 minutes with a total of 25 questions. Pass mark 60%
Unit 202: Principles of Electrical Science: scientific calculator, pen/pencil to make notes for formulas/calculations – Duration is 90 minutes with a total of 40 questions. Pass mark 50%
Unit 203: Electrical Installation Systems: Duration is 75 minutes with a total of 40 questions. Pass mark 60% – open book exam using labelled copy of IET On-Site Guide – BS 7671: 2018+A2:2022, scientific calculator, pen for calculations and notes. We will highlight important sections prior to the unit test. This is the final theory test.
Unit 210: Communication within the Building Industry: Duration is 40 minutes with a total of 20 questions – Pass mark 60%
All online tests are taken here at PTT, and all end-of-unit questions are multiple choice answers.
Independent study is also required as this is a compact short-term course, so please make use of the revision materials provided. Throughout the course you will encounter – written work, Maths and Science for working out formulas, equations and calculations, Health and Safety Practical Assessments, Bay Build Practical Assignment and four online theory-based unit tests with multiple-choice answers.
Unit 204: Bay Build Practical assessment in Workshop to include – wiring diagram – material list – tool list – written Wiring calculations and Containment calculations showing workings out to determine cable sizes, circuit protective device ratings and Cable capacities of conduit and trunking.
You will be required to install three circuits consisting of: 2-way switch lighting contained within PVC conduit – Ring final circuit to include 2-gang sockets x3 and a fused spur contained within steel conduit and trunking – 16A blue commando socket in SWA (steel wire armoured) cable mounted on steel tray – Schedule of Test Results showing Continuity, Insulation Resistance and Polarity.
Pens and pencils, highlighter pens (2 colours), fine-tip-coloured pens or pencils for wiring diagrams/ drawings (colours – brown, blue, green, yellow, red), 300mm ruler, scientific calculator, eraser, sticky tabs / Post-it flags for labelling On-Site Guide (repositionable, writable ones):
